ive been training at home while ive been low on cash, getting by with a basic setup. Been making progress inspite of it until today.
I was DB pressing my 48kgs, grinding for my 12th rep when i heard a shear and my head dropped towards the ground. The entire leg of the bench tore off. I managed to control the weights luckily, but it was bloody terrifying, happened so fast!

it's about 2 years old. Im definitely spending some good money on the next one, this could have ended really badly.
I actually thought of making a wooden one! I'm going away on holiday in 8 days though, so if i can manage till then, ill have gym access for the 2 weeks i'm away, then hopefully when i'm back i'll have some cash to replace this death trap.

Did it break at a weld or did the material just shear?

It was clean through the metal, not at a weld.

Holy shit, so you can rule out blaming the welder obviously. That must have just been made out of some crap pot metal

This is one of the many reasons that I think the overhead press would be better in a situation like yours than the bench.

Lucky you were using DB's. And in the future, don't rely on those hinge/pin setups like that. It's weak shit.

Check craigslist. There's always great deals on stuff there people are trying to get rid of.

Edit: you're in UK so I guess you can't go to craigslist.

Yeah, that bench was a piece of shit. Definitely won't skip on one again.
OHP will have a couple of weeks of preferential treatment at least.
