I'm going with no, because "positive" and "negative" are nonsense terms that aren't entirely accurate and shouldn't be used to describe muscle action whatsoever.

If anyone cares to hear an in-depth reason of why, start by explaining what is meant by "negative/positive." -3X

In Weider's book "Ultimate Bodybuilding" the terms positive and negative are used so they are not nonsense terms.

I think people call it positive/negative because they are easier to say and remember than 'concentric' & 'eccentric'.

Not saying this is right, but here's what it means to me:
Positive: movement you can controllably move in both directions.
Negative: movement you only control in one direction.
For example negative bench press: heavy weight you can slowly let down but need assistance to push back up, triceps; weight you need assistance pushing down but can controllably let come back up...

^^ and this is one of the reasons why they are not interchangeable with concentric and eccentric. Too much variation of what they mean or intimate. -3X

I don't get that lol..

Ok then how does this sound?
positive - when you squeeze the muscle to move the weight to the contraction position (usually up. therefore 'positive')
negative - when you relax the muscle to the stretched position (usually down. therefore 'negative')

I get what you're saying, but it's always meant to me that when you do "negatives" it usually at the end of your sets and you physically can't "push" or "pull" the weight, you can only let it sink, or raise, does that make sense? I feel like I'm doing s poor job of explaining...

@Thatguy81 yea! the trainers teach that at my gym all the time. they call it 'forced negative' though.

@qtdreams92 except, for the example you gave, "usually up" isn't applicable to lat pulldowns, triceps pressdowns, facepulls, or many variations of rows.

But the bigger issue is this (and this is why they are not appropriate terms): your definition of "negative" ("when you relax the muscle to the stretched position" ) is not only not the definition of an eccentric movement, it's about as opposite from the definition as you can be! -3X
