Q: What's the point of strapping the back? Lifting more? General safety?

Great post. I have always loved the deadlift and I've recently added these exercises in the last three weeks, as I too am weaker in the glutes and hamstrings then I thought. I also added Hip Trusts. They look odd in a gym yes but they are a must for glutes. None the less my DL went up 20lbs this last week since I posted. I'm doing PHAT but I work the DL in. I love the movement.
