For example with a lat pull down, you won't notice it but you are contracting one lat much more while on the other arm your below is flared forward and you are using more bicep. In my opinion each variation hits the back muscles differently. Rowing to the belly button involves the lats to a greater degree, rowing to the upper abdominal will hit the center back, and to the chest is upper back posterior deltoid. Im not saying these isolated these parts, just put different amount of stress.

Your lats might get an isometric contraction, but that's about it. Your erectors are a long muscle though - it's just that lat emphasis tends to obscure them, so visually it looks more like lower back development. BB rows probably have slightly more benefit for general back development.

For one, it's impossible to just target a single muscle of the back, as they work together to pull the weight. My workouts consist of 7-8 exercises @ 4 sets each (also a few warm up sets towards the beginning lifts). My back has responded extremely well to high volume training and I will never go back.
